Our IDCC team has been rolling full speed ahead towards the end of 2020 where we implemented our first ever program — Impact Capacity Building (ICB) Program. As we are getting ready for the start of 2021, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect and share our learnings with you continuously on this platform.

But before we go on, we would like to bring everyone on the same page by quickly introducing what ICB is. For those who are new to our work, ICB is IDCC’s first program, which works closely with Hong Kong’s leading impact intermediaries to build capacity of the growing social impact sector in more effectively measuring and managing impact through digital automation. Through ICB, intermediaries will co-create and crowdsource impact management methodologies and tools that will benefit both impact intermediaries and social purpose organizations in Hong Kong.

The ICB program comprises three components:

  1. Conducting Capacity Building Workshops — a structured yet flexible curriculum for improving digital transformation of impact management system
  2. Co-creating Impact Management Software Tools — helping intermediaries configure an impact management data platform that enables both the intermediary and their subsidiary social purpose organizations (SPOs) to conduct their impact management processes more efficiently and effective
  3. Establishing Foundations for Sharing Impact Data — creating a transparent and participatory digital governance ecosystem that enables digital accountability and automation for building a thriving social impact economy

Now that we have a big picture of ICB, here is a more detailed overview of the ICB Workshop. ICB Workshop’s curriculum is divided into 14 modules, which are designed to cover 5 themes:

  1. Orientation: Setting our Intentions for a Collective Journey
  2. Data Stewardship: Preparing for Hong Kong’s Inevitable Data Future
  3. Shaping what ‘Success’ looks like: Designing Your Impact Framework
  4. Getting your Hands Dirty: Frontline Data Collection Considerations
  5. Next Step: Kick Starting the Pilot & Digital Transformation Beyond the Programme

By completing the curriculum, we hope that intermediaries will have achieved:

  • Creation of a roadmap for short, mid and long term digital transformation
  • Have a solid understanding for how to protect their stakeholders’ data, handle data privacy and manage data storage with blockchain technology
  • Establishment of a Consortium Data Charter, Data-Sharing Manifesto, as well as their own guidelines for Data Ethics & Data Rights
  • Co-creation of an Impact Management Software Configuration that enables both portfolio-level and project-level impact management as well as frontline data collection and verification

There will be 3 cohorts for the entire ICB Program; each cohort will last for 3–6 months guiding 3–4 impact intermediaries through the digital transformation process. The first cohort has already started in Q4 2020 (we have completed 9 sessions covering 5 modules thus far) and is expected to complete by Q1 2021. The second cohort will be from Q2 to Q3 2021 and the third from Q4 2021 to Q1 2022.

During the global pandemic where there are limited opportunities for face to face meetings, we are utilizing the power of technology where we conduct our Workshops via Zoom where we give presentations and share pre-made video recordings and learning materials. Although we are physically apart from participants, we facilitate open-ended discussions that continue beyond the workshops and engage as much as possible in the collaborative process of consortium development. Through utilizing an online visual collaboration platform called Miro, we also facilitate collaborative whiteboard sessions where we can brainstorm ideas collectively and perform teamwork visually such as mapping and diagramming. Below are some sneak peeks and we will surely share more interesting materials from the zoom meetings and whiteboard sessions in some later posts.

We hope you will be onboard with IDCC in this ICB journey that we will take you through in the following months to come. We will begin posting updates to share the progress of the ICB program to keep our community and stakeholders abreast of our progress, e.g. latest methodologies and technologies we’ve developed, major learnings from discussions, and key challenges from intermediaries and SPOs.
